How do air conditioning heat pumps work?
Air conditioning is a method of space heating and cooling. Unlike most heating systems, it can be used to maintain comfortable temperatures in both summer and winter.
A standard system is comprised of an indoor and outdoor unit, connected by two refrigerant pipes. Put simply, hot or cold refrigerant gas is passed between the indoor and outdoor unit. The indoor unit fan pulls room air in, exchanges the gas pipe temperature into the air and distributes the newly made hot or cold air around the room. The user can choose what temperature they require.
This method of moving refrigerant gas is known as the heat pump cycle, and is extremely efficient.

What indoor air con units are available?
There are four common indoor air conditioning units available - by far the most common is the wall mounted unit. But there is also concealed ducted, ceiling and floor mounted units.
There is a wide variety of air conditioning units available. Please see our pricing section to view the full collection.
Up to 5 indoor units can be connected to one outdoor unit (as pictured). These can mix and match depending on the installation requirements.
Outdoor units all share the same cosmetic appearance. We can supply covers to conceal outdoor units if desired.

Other FAQ's:
Q. Where can air conditioning be installed?
A. Air conditioning units can be installed in a variety of different environments. At home this could be in bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, garages, outbuildings, conservatories. Commercially this could be in offices, restaurants, stores, kitchens, pubs. You name it!
Q. What do air conditioning systems look like?
A. Air conditioning units come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colour. Various units can be wall, ceiling or floor mounted. Some units can be hidden in lofts or cupboards entirely. See our products section for different variants.
Q. How efficient are air conditioning systems?
A. Modern air conditioning systems are extremely efficient. In heating mode they can produce up to five times their input power. This gives it an electrical input to heat generated ratio of 1:5. For comparison, an electric heater would have an electrical input to heat generated ratio of 1:1. Making AC up to 5 times more efficient than electric heaters.
Q. Are air conditioning units heat pumps?
A. Yes. Air conditioning units are known as 'Air to Air' heat pumps. They use the same technology as 'Air to Water' heat pumps, but with one less heat transfer. This technology has been used in air conditioning units for decades.
Q. What size air conditioning unit do I need?
A. Every situation is unique. Measured in kW, the right size system depends on various factors. These factors include square meterage, insulation, windows, people, and heat loads. Incorrect sizing will lead to a short equipment lifespan and increased running costs. We offer a free site survey to ensure correct sizing.
Q. Will the gas in my air conditioning unit need 'topping up' every so often?
A. No. Air conditioning units are completely sealed systems and should never leak refrigerant gas. No 'top up' takes place, only repair and recharge. If an air conditioning unit has lost gas, the leak must be found and repaired before recharging with new gas.
Q. How often should I service my air conditioning unit?
A. Air conditioning units should be serviced yearly to maintain efficiency and prevent failures. Yearly services are also required to maintain manufacturers warranty. Some larger air conditioning systems may need to be serviced at six month intervals.
Q. Why is my air conditioning unit not cooling/heating properly?
A. Common reasons include dirty filters, low refrigerant levels, blocked coils, wiring issues or faulty parts. If this is the case, we can diagnose and fix the problem. Servicing is key to prevent these issues.
Q. How long does installation take?
A. Installation time varies by system type and complexity of install. Simple systems can take a day, larger systems can take more than a week.
Q. Do your air conditioning units come with warranty?
A. Yes, all new installations come with 1 year parts and labour warranty. Dependent on manufacture selection, up to 5 years parts warranty is available.
Q. Will you service air conditioning units that haven't been fitted by Kirton Air Conditioning?
A. Yes, no problem.
